Millicent Nobis is the creative mind of the Berlin based jewellery label Mies Nobis. Actually Milli comes from Australia where she studied Fashion Design at Sydney’s Fashion Design Studio.
Her current collection is named ‘Skellet’ and is inspired by the shapes of horn, bone and shell; all elements that remain after death. Milli has used brass for the ‘Skellet’ collection, a material that tarnishes over time and gives the jewellery a special look and patina. As a limited edition some pieces of the ‘Skellet’ collection are available in sterling silver as well.
Also have a look at the ‘Tier’ collection. The pieces are made of steel, wood and again brass.
I asked Milli how it came that she changed from fashion or rather apparel to jewellery.
‘Studying fashion design led me to realize that I really had much more interest in jewellery, but it was a good base education in design, just with different materials.
The fashion industry can feel very superficial and with jewellery I feel less dictated by trends. I have found that sometimes approaching a medium without technical training enables more freedom in design because you are not weighed with expectation of how things should be done, rather just free with your own curiosity of what can be created.
Besides I was selling hand made feather earring’s at Bondi Beach markets way before I even applied to study Fashion!’
